Prompt rail: stay visible (dimmed) in narrow panes
Leo-ask: ask-8439440242
Leo (2026-10-24), on the prompt rail in narrow windows: "for the narrow windows, i think we should just simply be able to show it. don't shove the ui, but like... it should be fine. just hide it more"
What changed
When the pane is too narrow for the prompt rail beside the transcript text, the rail used to go fully invisible at rest (opacity: 0) until you hovered the pane-edge strip. Now it stays drawn over the text at 40% opacity, so you can always see it:
- Show it: visible at rest, never hidden.
- Don't shove the UI: nothing moves. The rail sits on top of the text as before, and the text column keeps its width.
- Hide it more: dimmed at rest. It still takes no clicks (
pointer-events: none), so text selection and links keep working. Hovering the edge strip or focusing the rail with the keyboard brings it to full strength, same as before.
One CSS value in threadMinimap.css. Spec: design/session-rail.md (leo-workspace), whose "hide visually at rest" line gets updated alongside.
Test
bun test test/thread-minimap-narrow.test.tsx: the new case "the occluded rail stays visible at rest, dimmed, and leaves the text its clicks" fails on base (opacity 0) and passes on head. The side test passes too (19/19).
Observed / Not run
Ran: the two bun suites above and scripts/web-lint.sh (fast lane). Not run: the Chromium narrow-pane browser test, the gallery capture, and a DEV build check.
Changelog
Changed: In narrow chat panes, the prompt rail now stays visible but dimmed over the text instead of disappearing.
