summary

launch polish for the cmux cloud welcome (ships with the 0.65.1 campaign).

  • new card: 460pt and opaque. the clip runs edge to edge at the top as a poster, with the app icon and "Introducing / cmux cloud" over a feathered band.
  • 5 feature rows with icons: create, desktop, invite, work together, runs while you're away.
    • the playing clip's row opens with a one-line use case, and clicking a row jumps to its clip.
    • autoplay advances when each clip ends.
  • create row shows the user's New Cloud Machine shortcut (⇧⌘Y by default, hidden if unbound).
  • full-width blue button that darkens on hover, with the plan note under it. the × in the corner and Escape are Not Now, and Cmd+W closes.
  • signed out now reads like free: "Upgrade to Pro" and the same note. pro still gets "Enable Cloud", now with "Already included in your plan."
  • no traffic lights, no pause button on the card.
  • reduce motion: each clip holds its first frame, and rows still switch clips.
  • captions stay on one line (they shrink a little if a translation is long), so the card keeps its height.
  • window title is now "cmux cloud". it was "Your work, wherever you go".
  • new spin-up clip: it shows the real New Machine flow with ⇧⌘Y, then the machine opening into a terminal. it's constant 30fps so the bar tracks it, and smaller (1.3 MB down to 0.3 MB).
  • picking a row restarts its clip: clicking the row that's already playing plays it again from the start, along with the bar.
  • icon without the bright ring: the dark app icon's edge bevel read as a white ring at 44pt on the dark band. CloudWelcomeIcon is the same icon with that bevel toned down. only the welcome uses it; the dock icon and the Cloud tab keep the regular one.

two fixes to bugs that were already there (the shipped welcome on main has both):

  • WindowToolbarController attached the cmux toolbar to every window that became main, the welcome included, so macOS 26 drew it as a toolbar window with a grey outline. the welcome is now skipped.
  • WindowDecorationsController re-showed the traffic lights on every didBecomeKey. it now leaves the welcome alone.

Changelog

  • Changed: the cmux cloud welcome is a new card with an autoplaying clip, five feature rows and one clear button.

variations (debug builds, Help menu)

four entries so we can compare headlines and layouts in the app. the first one is what ships.

  • Show Cloud Welcome…: the launch card, "Introducing / cmux cloud"
  • Show Cloud Welcome (Headline)…: "Introducing cmux cloud / Cloud machines for your agents"
  • Show Cloud Welcome (F, New Badge)…: title under the clip with a New badge, plus a Not Now + button footer (480pt)
  • Show Cloud Welcome (F, On Clip)…: headline on the clip without the icon, plus the Not Now footer (480pt)

the headline and F variants are behind the debug menu only. once we pick, i'll fold the winner into the default and drop the rest.

strings

  • 10 new user-facing keys, all 9 locales. the German uses du, like the rest of the welcome.
  • 3 new debug menu keys.
  • removed 7 keys nothing uses any more: the old .caption lines and the List / List + Dots debug entries.
  • ./scripts/localize-changes passes.

overlap

this overlaps #19188 (Austin's welcome polish). both change CloudWelcomeView, CloudWelcomeMedia and the window controller, and this one replaces that PR's 840pt side-by-side layout. whichever lands first, the other needs a rebase.

review

ran a correctness-first review pass. no blocking issues. fixed from it:

  • window title
  • the clip swallowing clicks, so the window can now be dragged by it
  • reduce motion
  • caption height changing between slides
  • orphaned strings

left as is:

  • a pro user who is signed out on this Mac sees "Upgrade to Pro". this is intended, since signed out reads like free.
  • the plan note is light grey on the light card, about 2.3:1 contrast.

testing

  • tagged dev build against the local backend: opened all four variations from Help, checked autoplay, row clicks, hover, × / Escape, and no toolbar or traffic lights.
  • cmuxTests/CloudWelcomeTests.swift updated: signed out resolves to upgrade, and the slide order is the new 5.

Summary by cubic

Ships the cmux cloud welcome as a launch card for the 0.65.1 campaign: a 460pt opaque card with the clip as a full-bleed poster, five icon rows, and a full-width blue call-to-action. The approved headline "Cloud machines for your agents" ships by default, pinned by a test that also locks the default layout.

  • Rows: create, desktop, invite, work together, runs while away; the playing row opens with a one-line use case, clicking a row jumps to its clip, and picking the playing row replays it from the start.
  • The create row shows the New Cloud Machine shortcut (⇧⌘Y, hidden if unbound).
  • The full-width button darkens on hover with the plan note under it; × and Escape are Not Now, Cmd+W still closes.
  • Signed-out users now see "Upgrade to Pro" rather than "Sign In"; Pro gets "Already included in your plan."
  • Window title is now "cmux cloud"; the card has no traffic lights, pause button, or window toolbar (the toolbar's outline appeared on macOS 26).
  • Reduce motion holds each clip on its first frame; captions stay on one line so the card keeps its height.
  • Debug Help menu adds two preview layouts (title under the clip with a New badge, and headline on the clip) to compare against the shipped card.
  • The welcome uses CloudWelcomeIcon, the app icon with its edge bevel toned down (it read as a white ring at 44pt); the dock icon and the Cloud tab's enable screen are unchanged.
  • New strings in all 9 locales; 7 unused keys removed.
  • The launch is claimed synchronously before its window opens, so overlapping launch triggers and a relaunch show the campaign only once; users who saw the 0.65.0 welcome still get this one, and an ineligible first window waits for the next launch.

Bug fixes

  • The toolbar controller no longer attaches the cmux toolbar to the welcome window, whose grey outline appeared on macOS 26.
  • The decorations controller no longer re-shows traffic lights on the welcome window.
